Total War Warhammer Battle Controls

By Stace Harman

Total War Warhammer II is a bit of an oddity as far as Creative Assembly games are concerned, lacking the flood of DLCs that usually accompany every Total War title. Two years since launch, the game has only received a couple of large expansion, and a couple of Lord Packs.

If you’re excited to command a cavalcade of spectral riders, or to fire a goblin from a giant catapult but are totally clueless about Total War, we have you covered, thanks to these six handy hints for Total War newbies.

  • Total War: Warhammer Formation Control Guide and Tips May 30, 2016 by Peter Parrish The PC Invasion Total War: Warhammer review will be appearing in the next few days, and in the process of dealing with quarreling Elector Counts, sinister Vamps, and a whole lot of Chaos spawn I’ve picked up various shortcuts and techniques for manipulating unit formations.
  • A quick siege is a good siege. Total War: Warhammer does away with this phase: every siege starts with the attacker in range of the defender's towers. Besiegers have to run straight up to the walls, getting a battering ram or large monster to the gates and using infantry's ladders–they all carry them, don't ask where–to scale the walls.

Troop Deployment and Battlefield Positioning

The Troop Deployment phase of each skirmish can be considered the calm before the storm. Use this time to scope out the lay of the land and deploy your troops in a starting formation, placing your units in tactical locations in order to maximise their potential.

Dwarves are one of the many factions available to players.

Fast moving cavalry can take up flanking positions and those with the Vanguard ability can even begin behind enemy lines for a surprise attack. Group your units to make them easier to wield in the heat of battle and use the terrain to your advantage, but remember: while hills and trees make for excellent cover, your own ranged units need a clear line of sight, too. After all, they cannot hit what they cannot see.

Harnessing the Winds of Magic

Total War Warhammer Battle Controls Guide

The Winds of Magic blow throughout the Old World of Total War: Warhammer, fuelling the powerful mystical abilities of fearsome sorcerers and legendary heroes alike. Utilise your spell-casters’ powerful magics to hinder your enemy’s most terrifying beasts, cause panic in the ranks of infantry or to lay waste to entire units lower-level foes.

Always be aware of the level of your Winds of Magic and of how quickly it’s recharging so that you can harness its power at a moment’s notice. Used right, the Winds of Magic can help to turn the tide of battle with a well-timed buff to your troops or a well-placed vortex to devastate your enemy’s army.

Empire Building and Diplomatic Relations

In order to recruit, train and maintain a formidable fighting force on the battlefield, it’s necessary to see to the efficient running of your empire. Take time to study the Campaign Map and construct buildings in your settlements and provinces that will aid your war efforts.

Bear in mind that peace can also be profitable, so look to your neighbours for trade opportunities or to fill gaps in your available resources. Of course, in Total War: Warhammer, peace is only ever fleeting and you should always be prepared to defend your borders or, where diplomacy fails, to take what you need by force.

Taking a Timeout (Battle Pause)

Sometimes, no matter how well-prepared you might be, battles can escalate more quickly than you’re ready for. In times such as these, strategic use of the pause button can give you room to breathe and reassess your options.

Playing on normal difficulty, commands can be issued to troops while the battle is paused and so calling a temporary halt to proceedings can give you time to regroup before planning your next moves. While you’re at it, pausing the action also gives you a chance to get up close and personal to study some of the game’s ugliest, most terrifying or outright awesome units!

Maximising the Battle Potential of Lords and Heroes

The Lords and Heroes of Total War: Warhammer are not some precious hands-off Generals who have forgotten what it is to go toe to toe with the enemy. These legendary units are some of the most powerful the game has to offer and should be used accordingly.

Thorgrim Grudgebearer is the Dwarven Lord

Spend skill points to upgrade their abilities and stand them shoulder to shoulder with their troops, where they’ll provide a leadership buff to those around them and help boost morale and battle prowess. Likewise, taking out the enemy lord will dent the confidence of the enemy army, making it more likely they’ll turn tail and flee like the craven dogs they are!

Using the Right Tool for the Job

If you’re to be victorious in your efforts to conquer the Old World for the good of Man/Dwarf/Orc or Vampire-kind, you’ll need to learn to identify the right tool for the job. Knowing where and when to deploy a diplomatic word, a unit of Demigryph Knights, an Arachnarok Spider or a magical vortex is key to becoming a successful ruler.

Sometimes, cunning and strategy will be necessary to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds, at others a well-struck trade agreement will bolster the fortunes of your empire. Every now and then, though, the only solution is to strap on a pair..of wings, climb into a catapult and deliver high-velocity justice to those that dare to oppose you.

Encounters differ greatly from the action that takes place on the world map. Here everything happens in real time, there's no division to turns, and all the actions are performer at the same time. You should remember about a couple of things to make this process a little easier.

Controlling the flow of the time

During the encounter you will have to control up to 40 units at the same time, which will, most likely, be fighting in several places. Keeping up with all that in real time is quite impossible (and at least extremely difficult), which is why you should control the flow of the time at all times.

You can control the flow of the time with the help of the buttons located in the upper right corner of the battle screen. Those allow you to decrease and increase the speed at which the time flows. Additionally, thanks to them, you can also turn on the active pause. During it all the action on the battlefield will stop, but you will still be able to issue orders to your troops. You should use this option as often as possible to be able to coordinate the actions of your troops to their fullest potential.

Controlling the action on the battlefield

The magic roulette allows you to randomize the amount of Winds of Magic points again.

A thing that you must absolutely refrain from doing is to set up your forces at the beginning of the battle, order them to do something and leave everything to the fate. Doing so allows you to lose even the encounters where your forces had a huge advantage over the enemies - and in the best case you will suffer insanely large casualties. You must monitor the battlefield all the time and issue orders to your troops to counter the actions of the enemy.

The first thing to pay attention to is to look at the types of units the enemy is using and where he is sending them. The enemy will try to use his units to counter your own and to use their abilities to their fullest potential. If a wing of your army is not protected by your missile units you can be sure that the enemy will use this opportunity to harass you with his own marksmen. If you set up a few units of spearmen that are effective against cavalry you can be sure that the enemy will send units of elite melee combatants that will make a short work of your spearmen. The same applies when your units are not protected from the cavalry - unprotected missile units are a dream come true for a shock cavalry.

You should zoom out the camera to have a better view of the battlefield.

Pay attention to the types of units your enemy sends to battle and where he sends them and counter them. If the enemy sends a group of cavalry units to strike your flank, send a group of spearmen to stop them. If a flank is harassed by a group of enemy marksmen, send your own missile units to get rid of them. This does not mean that you must limit yourself to defense only. If the enemy leaves a group of marksmen or artillery without protection, send your fast cavalry units to get rid of them.

If you notice a unit that causes terror on the battlefield (such as a Giant), focus all of your missile units' attention on that foe. Those units are capable of causing terror in the nearby units, which can cause them to run away in fear and expose your vulnerable units that they were protecting.

If the enemy sends his Lord on the frontlines, focus all of your marksmen, artillery and most powerful melee combatants (such as your own Lord) fire on that unit. If the enemy Lord dies or is wounded the discipline of his troops will take a severe hit - they will be easy to scare off and they won't come back to fight with no Lord present.

Improvise

The course of an encounter can rarely be predicted - the terrain that was randomized for the battle is not good for your units, the enemy will try to hide some of his units and the discipline of your troops will be broken and they will route. The most important thing is to remain calm and try to keep control over the situation.

If the tactic you've chosen for the encounter, such as setting up a wall of melee combatants and using your missile units to eliminate the enemies failed, shift gears and think about another one. Try to surround the enemy units to force them to flee in panic - other units will also take a hit to their discipline when seeing their teammates running away from the battlefield. This can turn around the whole encounter and will allow you to win.
